History of the Association of Greek Choreographers

The Association of Greek Choreographers was established in 1999 and aims at promoting and diffusing dance and artistically related activities, bringing together choreographers and providing its members with information concerning dance related issues. Almost every choreographer in Greece is a member of the Association. Up till now the Association has successfully organized the following activities:

1999 / 20th October

A nonprofit dance performance during which the works of 18 choreographers were shown. The revenue from the performance was deposited in a special bank account of the Minister of Economy to relieve all 1999 earthquake victims in Athens.

2000:

A nonprofit dance performance that took place in the Evangelismos Metro Station on the occasion of the celebration of the underground metro system in Athens.
A videodance performance of 37 choreographers projected on monitors in Omonoia and Syntagma Metro stations. The performance took place on the 5th of May to mark the occasion of the World Dance Day and in relation to the European Culture Day that was organized by the Melina Merkouri Foundation and the Network of European Capitals of Culture. The same production was projected in the opening of the Kalamata International Dance Festival (2000) and the Month of the Dance that took place in Thessaloniki in July 2000.

2002 / 29th April:

A celebration of the World Dance Day in Katia Dandoulaki theatre in order to commemorate and award Zouzou Nikoloudi for her lifetime achievement, present the works by Greeks choreographers and lead an open discussion related to the problems of the national dance scene between dance makers, dance critics and the audience.

2002 / 16th May – 9th July:

The 1st Dance Festival which was organized by the Association with the support of the Ministry of Culture took place in Katia Dandoulaki theatre. 19 dance companies participated and 28 choreographers presented their work.

2003 / 28th March – 20th June:

The 2nd Dance Festival which was organized by the Association with the support of the Ministry of Culture took place in both Katia Dandoulaki and Roes theatre. 38 dance companies participated and 54 choreographers in total were presented.

2004 / 23rd – 26th January:

The 1st Greek Contemporary Dance Platform was organized in collaboration with the Athens Concert Hall. 40 dance companies participated and a 15 minute sample of the work of every of the 39 choreographers was shown. The «ΧΟΡΟΣ-DANCE» monograph was published (KOAN editions) with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture in order to present 50 Greek dance companies and choreographers.

2004 / 2nd April – 24th June:

The 3rd Dance Festival of the Association, which also received funding from the Ministry of Culture, was organized in both Katia Dandoulaki and Roes theatre. 40 dance companies participated and 60 choreographers presented their work.

2004 / 29th April:

World Dance Day celebration in Katia Dandoulaki theatre. In addition, Maria Hors was awarded for her lifetime achievement and a showcase for Greek choreographers took place.

2005 / 10th January:

A congress in the Hellenic-American Union with the following topic: «The identity of the Greek Contemporary Dance».

2005 / 22nd – 25th April:

The 1st Greek Contemporary Dance Panorama in collaboration with American Community Schools - Athens. 28 dance companies participated and 15 minute samples of 28 choreographies were shown.

2005 / 15th May:

Celebration of the World Dance Day in Katia Dandoulaki theatre. During the celebration Maria Kinigou was awarded for her lifetime achievement while a showcase for Greek choreographers took place.

2005 / 16th May- 19th June:

The 4th Dance Festival of the Association, which received funding from the Ministry of Culture, took place in several theaters: Katia Dandoulaki, Roes, Embros and Altera Pars. 54 dance companies participated and 72 chorographers presented their work.

2006 / 2nd – 5th February:

The 2nd Greek Contemporary Dance Platform took place in and was organized in collaboration with the Athens Concert Hall. Each of the 8 dance companies participated with a 35 minute work after being selected by an international committee of five; the works were shown in the Nikos Skalkotas Hall. Each of the remaining 29 dance companies had the chance to present a 15 minute long sample of their work in the Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall.

2006 / 5th May – 22nd June:

The 5th Dance Festival of the Association, which received funding from the Ministry of Culture, took place in the following theaters: Roes, Hitirio, Argo, Meli and Embros. 55 dance companies participated and 86 choreographers presented their work.

2007 / 16th March- 31st May:

The 6th Dance Festival of the Association, which was organized under the aegis of and received, funding from the Ministry of Culture, took place in the following theaters: Thiseion, Athens Contemporary Theatre, Roes, Argo and Hitirio. 38 dance companies participated and 42 choreographers presented their work.

2007 / 30th – 31st March and 1st April:

The 2nd Greek Contemporary Dance Panorama was organized in collaboration with ACS. 19 dance companies participated and 15-minute samples of the work of 20 choreographers were shown.

2007 / 23rd April:

Celebration of the World Dance Day in the Benaki Museum in the presence of the Minister of Culture. Elli Solomonidou Balanou was awarded for her lifetime achievement and in specific for the illustrations she has been designing for the newspaper Kathimerini – Arts Section.

2008 / 18th – 27th January:

The 3rd Greek Contemporary Dance Platform took place in and was organized in collaboration with the Athens Concert Hall. 19 dance companies participated after being selected by an international committee of 7 and had the chance to present their work in Nikos Skalkotas Hall.

2008 / 8th April – 15th June:

The 7th Dance Festival of the Association, which was organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the Hellenic National Center of Theatre and Dance, took place in the following theaters: Ivi, Alkmini, Roes, Argo and Dipylon. 49 dance companies participated and 73 choreographers presented their work.

2009 / 25th & 26th April:

«Encounters 2009» (3rd Greek Contemporary Dance Panorama and Celebration of the World Dance Day) in the Benaki Museum. The above was organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the Hellenic National Center of Theatre and Dance and the International Dance Council of UNESCO in Greece. 17 dance companies participated and 21 choreographers had the chance to discuss openly about their work with the audience.

2009 / 7th May – 23rd June:

The 8th Dance Festival of the Association, which was organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the Hellenic National Center of Theatre and Dance and the International Dance Council of UNESCO in Greece, took place in the following theaters: Alkmini, Argo, Vasilakou and Roes. 42 dance companies participated and 56 choreographers presented their work.

2010 / 22nd -25th April:

The 1st International Dance Conference of the Association entitled «Dancing Bodies: Practices and Policies», co-organized with the University of Peloponnese – Theater Studies Department and Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall, under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Hellenic Center of Theater and Dance as well as the U.S. Embassy in Athens

2010/ May – June:

The 9th Dance Festival of the Association which is organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the Hellenic National Center of Theatre and Dance will take place in three theaters in Athens. 50 dance companies are participating and 60 choreographers are presenting their work.

2010 / 5th – 8th June:

The 4th Greek Contemporary Dance Platform is taking place in and is being organized in collaboration with Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the Hellenic National Center of Theatre and Dance. 10 dance companies are participating after being selected by an international committee of five. The Platform will take place in Nikos Skalkotas Hall.
